Gluten-Free Rice Flour

Gluten- Free Rice Flour

Rice flour is made up of finely milled white rice or brown rice. It is a healthy variable for all-purpose flour, corn flour or rye flour. Nowadays, rice flour is also available ‘gluten-free’. So what does this gluten-free rice mean?

Gluten is a sticky protein found in various grains and cereals such as wheat, rye, etc. When mixed with water, this protein forms a glue-like consistent liquid, hence the name GLUE-TEN. But if it’s a protein why is it harmful for consumption?

Not all proteins are naturally good for the human body, out of which gluten due to its sticky nature, tends to stick to the lining of the digestive system and causes further digestive tract problems.

Gluten is also the main reason for ’Celiac disorder”, also referred as “Gluten-intolerance”.  It is an autoimmune disorder, which treats gluten as a foreign invader and attacks both gluten as well as the lining of gut. This can cause severe digestive disorders and other related health problems.

It has also been found that people not suffering from celiac disorder suffer from allied health issues. This condition is termed as “non-celiac gluten sensitivity” which is known as wheat allergy in common terms. This is a proven cause of diarrhoea, bloating, tiredness and depression in both children and adults.

Many foodstuffs are high in gluten such as-

  • Wheat
  • Rye
  • Bread
  • Roti
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Cake, cookies, etc.

What to do if your staple diet includes items made from gluten? Your best option and solution is gluten-free rice or rice flour.

Rice flour is great option for daily consumption if you’re looking for options to go on a gluten-free diet. This rice flour is rich in soluble fibre, which helps the body to eliminate waste easily. It also helps to maintain low cholesterol levels and keeps the blood sugar levels in check.

Rice flour contains a nutrient called ‘choline’ which helps maintain healthy liver function and helps transport cholesterol and triglycerides wherever needed in the body.

Rice flour can be used made to make variety of food items. Rice flour when mixed with water starts to thicken up which can be used in making thick curries, gravies, soups, etc. Rice flour can also be used to make bakery items, like cakes, cookies, pasta, etc.

With the increase in health awareness among the people, more and more people are opting for gluten-free diet containing the hazardous effects it has on health for long term.

It is advised to increase the consumption of gluten-free diet. You can also start it at home by substituting wheat/all-purpose flour with rice flour. Many leading industries are now producing rice flour/powder on a large scale. PP Foods is one such rice grit manufacturing company with a good product range of rice products.
