Which is Healthier: Rice v/s Chapattis
India is a multi-cultural country, with countless number of invasions in the past. All of this resonates not only in the culture but also in the preparation and consumption food in the country. Indians have a large appetite when it comes to different cuisines. But their love for major staple food remains the same throughout.
Chapattis and Rice form the core of the daily Indian diet. Understanding the nutritional value of both the grains is crucial to compare their benefits.
Vitamins
Vitamins are very vital nutrients present in food. The brown rice and the whole grain wheat when compared, have an equal amount of vitamins present in them. Vitamins are water soluble and get dissolved easily. Vitamins such as thiamine, niacin, riboflavin and vitamin E are considered and proven to be very effective. Rice also contains beta-folate, which helps in the nourishment of new cells.
Minerals
Minerals are very important for the nourishment of the body. The brown rice and the whole wheat grains contain all the required minerals such as iron, phosphorus, calcium, zinc etc. The rice and wheat contain equal amounts of iron in them but there is no calcium present in rice.
Fibre
Whole-grain wheat has two to three times more fibre than brown rice. Both grains provide soluble and insoluble fibre, but they have a significantly higher percentage of insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre helps food move through the digestive tract, prevents constipation, lowers the risk of developing the diverticular disease and relieves symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.
Gluten
Gluten is another protein which gets sticky when mixed with water. It is highly present in chapattis. But gluten has a tendency to stick in the digestive tracts due to its sticky nature, which can cause severe irritation in the digestive system. Rice has options to be gluten-free and hence is a great choice for someone suffering from celiac disease or who are otherwise allergic to gluten products.
Considering the amounts of nutrients present in both rice and chapatti, both have almost equal amount of nutrients and consequently have some missing nutrients. Thus, a balanced diet of rice and chapatti makes up for a healthier meal.
